Never Believed In Angels Anyway

 "Never Believed In Angels Anyway"
Acrylic on canvas
24"x36"

This was painted entirely with my hands/fingers (no brushes!) in a middle-of-the-night burst of inspiration. Over the past few months several people close to me have lost people close to them and I'd been thinking a lot about the relationship between legacy, mortality, and metamorphosis. There are actual, literal tears mixed with the paint in this piece.

Sabine, France 1944

 "Sabine, France 1944"
Acrylic on canvas, 16x20

I've written in the past about a book I found at a thrift store called "The Family of Woman" which is filled with black and white photography of everyday scenes. There is no commentary about the images so you don't really know what's going on; which is perfect for people like me who like to invent new realities! Every time I flip through the book I am captivated by the face of this little girl sitting on a crate next to her mother who is singing and playing the accordion for tips. Though I don't know their actual story, when I see it I see WWII-era France and the resilience that comes from facing a tragedy without giving up hope for the future.

Waiting

"Waiting" If you've been paying attention, you've probably noticed a persistent theme in much of my art: The loneliness that goes hand-in-hand with not really being alone.

Cate

Share
The next edition in the 6x6 series is Cate. I believe I mentioned it in an earlier post but I'll throw it out there again... When I decided to embark on this series of small paintings I had to make a decision about composition: simply paint smaller versions of my typical work, or crop the faces in tight. I chose to paint the faces nearly the same size as I usually do and severely crop all additional information. It's interesting to me to see how they're coming together and how even though the viewer has nothing to go on, the expressions are able to tell so much of the story of the piece.

All pieces from the 6x6 series are six inches square and painted on untreated oak board. They are being sold in my Etsy shop for only $40 each.

A Prison Of My Own

Share

"A Prison Of My Own" I try very hard to be content, and sometimes even happy, with my world. But the truth is, I am never satisfied. With anything. Ever. I always feel like I am trying to run away and leave something behind, while simultaneously running toward something "better". Even though I have no idea what it is that I'm running from or toward. This is a fairly literal representation of how I feel most of the time: running scared, blind, and ready to trip in my own darkness.

Set Apart For An Instant

Share

"Set Apart For An Instant" If I could choose a super power it would be Invisibility. I am a rather socially awkward person and am much more comfortable observing over participating. A lifetime of observation has left me with some favorite moments. Not necessarily individual moments (though there are some great ones!), but moments we share without knowing. We are all guilty of masking our true feelings; especially, it seems, from those we care about most. This painting captures that moment of true emotion just before the smile-for-the-world covers it up.
